Saint Martin of Tours
November 11
Martin was born of pagan parents in what is now Hungary around the year 316 and was raised in Italy. The son of a Roman officer, he was forced to serve in the army at the age of 15. He became a Christian catechumen, and was baptized at 18.
On a cold day, the legend goes, Martin met a poor man, almost naked, trembling, and begging from passersby. Martin had nothing but weapons and clothes. He drew his sword, cut his cloak into two pieces, and gave one to the beggar. That night in his sleep Martin saw Christ dressed in the half of the garment he had given away, and heard Him say: "Martin, still a catechumen, has covered Me with his garment."
At 23, Martin was discharged and went to be a disciple of St. Hilary of Poitiers, France. He was ordained a priest and after a brief exile, returned to France where he lived for 10 years , forming his disciples and preaching throughout the countryside.
The people of Tours demanded that he become their Bishop. He was the ideal good pastor, founding other monasteries, educating the clergy, and preaching the Gospel. He died in 397.
Let us remember Saint Martin of Tours as we celebrate St. Maarten's Day on November 11.
Let us remember Humility and kindness
